Launching conference of Global Fund AMFm Project was held in Ghana
Date: Mar.4.2011

Malaria is one of the major public health crises in most developing countries. Every year, 300 to 500 million people suffer malaria all over the world. It is reported by WHO that there’re 243 million people infect malaria, 8.63 million of which die from malaria in 2008. Around the world, 85% of the malaria cases are in Africa, 10% in East-Asia and the rest in other countries.

The Global Fund always spends lots of funds and donates medicines to severe areas. Although the form of malaria has been improved a lot, it’s still a long journey to eradicate completely. Artemisinin-based treatment appointed by WHO is also the first new medicine with independent intellectual property in China, but it’s not available to the poor due to its high price comparing with other anti-malaria drugs (such as quinine, chloroquine, etc.).

In order to help some Africa and Asian countries out of sever malaria better, the Global Fund launched AMFm (Affordable Medicine Facility-malaria) program in 2010, the main aims of which are: To reduce retail price of ACTs by subsidizing to manufacturer; To ensure high-quality ACTs into host countries instead of non-artemisinin, monograph and counterfeiting and substandard drugs. The host countries of AMFm are Cambodia, Kenya, Madagascar, Niger, Nigeria, Tanzania (including Zanzibar) and Uganda.

Guilin Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. is the only qualified manufacturer in China as it’s the original enterprise produces Artesuante tablets and injection. In order to enlarge the popularity of domestic drugs and considering the different policies, GUILIN set up branch office in Ghana to explore the market there before the launch of AMFm in 2010. The decision is proved to be wisdom after nearly one year; our product ARSUAMOON grabbed the opportunity in the beginning of the program. GUILIN sold 860 thousand units in 3 months and places a new order of 1.3 million units already.

In February 2, 2011, the launching conference about AMFm was held in Accra. The president of Ghana, minister of Health, director of NMCP, representatives from WHO and Global Fund all participate in this conference. Also, all the six manufacturers show their own products to the public and perform the drama about AMFm in their mother-languages.
